How do I say 'delicious'?

LITERAL

Good to eat.

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

Delicious / tasty.

WHEN IT FITS

Complimenting foodAny meal, from casual to formalCan be said to the cook, host, or table

好吃 is one of the most important words in the Chinese social vocabulary — food is central to Chinese culture, and complimenting it is a basic social act. The word itself is simple (好 + 吃 = good-eat), but the social expectations around it are rich.

The 好吃 / 好喝 split is non-negotiable: if it goes in your mouth solid, it is 好吃; if you drink it, it is 好喝. Soup (汤), tea (茶), coffee (咖啡), and alcohol (酒) all take 好喝. Getting this right signals grammatical competence beyond vocabulary.

Beyond the basics, native-level food compliments get more specific: 很入味 (the flavor has penetrated — perfect for braised dishes), 口感很好 (great texture), 太香了 (incredible aroma — often said the moment food arrives, before tasting). A flat 好吃 repeated for every dish sounds polite but foreign. Varying your compliments to match what the dish is actually good at sounds like you eat Chinese food.
