What does 拉黑 mean?
The universal block/blacklist word across all Chinese apps — essential for managing your digital boundaries.
拉黑
Block / blacklist — preventing someone from contacting you or seeing your content.
Pull into black.
Block / blacklist — preventing someone from contacting you or seeing your content.
WHEN IT FITS
拉黑 is the nuclear option of Chinese social media relationships. 拉 (pull) + 黑 (black) = pull someone into the blacklist. Every Chinese platform has this feature, and the word is universal across WeChat, Weibo, Douyin, Xiaohongshu, QQ, and every messaging app.
The social meaning of being 拉黑ed is culturally specific. On WeChat, when someone blocks you, your message to them shows a red exclamation mark (!) and the system message “对方已开启好友验证,你还不是他(她)朋友” (the other party has enabled friend verification — you are not yet their friend). This moment is so universally recognized that screenshots of this red exclamation mark are a meme genre.
The distinction between related actions is important:
- 拉黑 (block) — they cannot message you, see your Moments, or find you by search. Mutual and invisible — they won’t know you blocked them until they try to message you.
- 删除 (delete) — you remove them as a contact. If they message you, they will see the friend verification notice. More confrontational.
- 屏蔽 (mute/hide) — you still have them as a contact, but you hide your Moments from them or mute their posts. Much less severe.
In Chinese relationship drama (online and real life), 拉黑 is a statement. The phrase 他把我拉黑了 (he blocked me) carries emotional weight — it is the digital equivalent of slamming a door.
HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY SAY IT
