红包 is the Chinese way to give money — and in modern China, it is mostly digital. You need to understand this word to function socially: at weddings, you give a physical 红包. At Chinese New Year, elders hand children physical 红包. In every WeChat group, friends and colleagues send digital 红包 that everyone rushes to grab with their thumbs.
The digital 红包 on WeChat revolutionized Chinese social life. You can send a fixed amount to one person (转账红包), or you can send a lump sum to a group chat where the money is randomly divided among grabbers (拼手气红包 — luck-based red packet). The randomness turns gift-giving into a game: someone might send 100 yuan split among 10 people, and each person gets a random amount. The person who gets the most is celebrated; the person who gets the least is teased. This gamification made 红包 a social phenomenon.
The etiquette: when you receive a 红包, especially from an elder or superior, you should express thanks. A simple 谢谢 is fine; a 谢谢老板 (thanks, boss) or 谢谢阿姨 (thank you, auntie) is warmer.
