What does 弹幕 mean?

弹幕 is the single feature that most distinguishes Chinese video culture from Western platforms. The word originally meant “bullet curtain” (a military term for a dense barrage of gunfire), but in internet usage it describes the real-time comments that scroll across the screen while a video plays. Where Western platforms put comments below the video, Chinese platforms overlay them directly on the content.

Bilibili (B站) pioneered and perfected 弹幕, and the feature has since spread to every major Chinese video platform. When you watch a show on iQiyi, Tencent Video, or Youku, you can toggle 弹幕 on or off. When something dramatic happens in the show, the screen fills with reactions — laughter, shock, warnings, in-jokes — all from other viewers watching at different times.

Danmu have their own culture and vocabulary:

• 前方高能 (high energy ahead) — a warning that something intense, scary, or important is about to happen
• 合影留念 (group photo for memory) — posted at historically significant moments, like a celebrity’s first appearance
• 打卡 (checking in) — marking that you watched this at a specific date/time
• 23333 — laughter (the number code from forum emoji #233)
• AWSL — overwhelmed by cuteness

Danmu create a sense of shared viewing even when watching alone. The comments from previous viewers are already there, waiting for you. Your comment will be there for future viewers. It transforms solitary video watching into a collective experience across time.
