PUA (Pick-Up Artist) entered Chinese internet culture and underwent a dramatic semantic expansion. In English, PUA is a specific (and widely mocked) subculture of men teaching each other manipulative dating techniques. In Chinese, PUA became the general term for psychological manipulation in any context — and 职场PUA (workplace PUA) is its most important application.

职场PUA describes the systematic psychological manipulation that toxic bosses use to control employees: constant criticism designed to destroy self-confidence, followed by small doses of praise to create dependency. Telling someone they are worthless and unemployable anywhere else — while simultaneously demanding loyalty and extra work. Making employees feel that they are lucky to have a job at all, and that asking for reasonable treatment is ingratitude.

The term gave Chinese workers language for something they were experiencing but couldn’t name. Posts identifying 职场PUA tactics routinely go viral because the recognition is so powerful: “That’s what my boss does. That’s what it is.” The PUA framework turns a diffuse feeling of workplace misery into an identifiable pattern that can be named, discussed, and resisted.

The broader PUA vocabulary in Chinese now includes 情感PUA (emotional PUA in relationships), 家庭PUA (family PUA from parents), and the general verb PUA — 他在PUA你 means “he’s manipulating you psychologically.” The term has become the standard Chinese word for gaslighting and emotional manipulation in all their forms.

HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY USE IT

领导天天说我能力不行,又说离开这里我去哪都找不到工作。这就是职场PUA。

Lǐngdǎo tiāntiān shuō wǒ nénglì bù xíng, yòu shuō líkāi zhèlǐ wǒ qù nǎ dōu zhǎo bu dào gōngzuò. Zhè jiù shì zhíchǎng PUA.

My boss tells me every day that I'm incompetent, and that I couldn't find a job anywhere else. This is workplace PUA.
