What does 润 mean as slang?

The most politically charged Chinese internet slang of the 2020s — understood by all, written in code by design.

rùn

Run away / emigrate / get out — coded internet slang for leaving China, usually for political or economic reasons.

LITERAL

Moist / smooth / to embellish — but here it represents English 'run.'

WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

Run away / emigrate / get out — coded internet slang for leaving China, usually for political or economic reasons.

WHEN YOU SEE IT

Discussing emigration plans (often in coded language)Commenting on people leaving the countryPolitical and economic complaint

润 is the most linguistically ingenious piece of Chinese internet slang in recent years. It is the English word “internet-slang/run” — as in “run away, get out, escape” — borrowed into Chinese through a character that sounds like the English word but means something completely different. 润 (rùn) normally means “moist, smooth, to embellish,” but in this usage, the meaning is purely phonetic: it is the English verb “internet-slang/run” in Chinese clothing.

The word emerged around 2021-2022 as a way to discuss emigration while evading content moderation on Chinese social media platforms. “Run” became 润, and a whole coded vocabulary developed: 润学 (run-ology — the study of emigration strategies), 润人 (runner — someone who has emigrated or plans to), 想润 (want to run).

The word is politically loaded in a way that most Chinese internet slang is not. Using 润 signals a specific critical stance toward conditions in China — that things are bad enough to warrant leaving. It is the linguistic endpoint of the 内卷 → 躺平 → 润 pipeline: first you compete, then you opt out, then you leave.

The character choice is clever: 润 sounds like “run,” but its actual meaning (moist, smooth) is so unrelated that automated content filters looking for emigration-related keywords would never catch it. This is linguistic camouflage — the word hides in plain sight.

HOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY USE IT

隔壁组的程序员都润了,现在只剩我一个人。

Gébì zǔ de chéngxùyuán dōu rùn le, xiànzài zhǐ shèng wǒ yí ge rén.

All the programmers in the next team ran — now I'm the only one left.

Workplace emigration
今年好多人都在考虑润,但是哪有那么容易。

Jīnnián hǎo duō rén dōu zài kǎolǜ rùn, dànshì nǎ yǒu nàme róngyì.

So many people are thinking about running this year — but it's not that easy.
